Sabrina’s Secret Stash : TV on the Radio (Nine Types of Light) A Tribute to bassist Gerard Smith, who sadly passed on Wednesday, April 20th 2011. He was battling lung cancer, and he was only 36 years old. Posted the following day, “We are very sad to announce the death of our beloved friend and bandmate, Gerard Smith, following a courageous fight against lung cancer,” the band said on the website. “We will miss him terribly.”
Tv on the Radio, hailing from Brooklyn, are just one of those bands you simply can not classify! often described as art rock or post-punk, but is educated by a diverse spectrum of styles including free-form jazz and acappella music, psychedelia and trip-hop, modern soul and classic ’90s indie rock, giving them a unique and original sound. Their love of different genres is more than evident throughout their five albums, “Ok Calculator” (2001), “Desperate Youth, Blood Thirsty Babes” (2004), “Return to Cookie Mountain” (2006), “Dear Science” (2008) and the newly released “Nine Types of Light.” The album recorded in Los Angeles, at band member/producer Dave Sitek’s home studio, has a very West Coast vibe! Nine Types of Light does not disappoint, in fact I suggest all their albums and eps. they are like a breath of fresh air in this often suffocatingly shallow music climate!
Rest in peace Gerard Smith, the music and memories live on! -S
Second Song, Will Do, Caffeinated Consciousness, New Cannonball Run, Keep Your Heart, You.
“Nine Types of Light is as much an album as it is a movie by TV on the Radio. The movie is meant to be a visual re-imagining of the record, and includes a music video for every song on the album. The band personally asked their friends and the filmmakers they admired to help direct the music videos. Tunde Adebimpe, the director for the full Nine Types of Light movie, storybooked the music videos together with interviews from local New Yorkers on various topics, including dreams, love, fame and the future. Tunde also directed the music video for Forgotten. Nine Types of Light, both the album and the movie are set to release on April 12, 2011.”
